How Much Caffeine Is in Your Coffee? Espresso, latte, flat white & more

Caffeine depends on how many espresso shots are in your cup, not on the drink’s name. Here is a clear caffeine chart for every coffee on the MRJADE menu, plus matcha, so you can pick the right lift for the time of day.

Quick answer

How much caffeine is in a coffee?

A single shot of espresso has about 63 mg of caffeine, and a double has about 125 mg. Milk drinks such as a latte, cappuccino or flat white contain the same caffeine as the espresso shots inside them; the milk adds none. An 8 oz cup of brewed filter coffee has roughly 95 mg, and a serving of matcha roughly 60–70 mg.

So the strongest drink is not always the one that tastes strongest. A small flat white with two shots has more caffeine than a large latte made with one.

Caffeine rules of thumb
Single espresso shotAbout 63 mg
Double espresso shotAbout 125 mg
Milk, sugar, chocolate syrupAdd no meaningful caffeine (chocolate adds a little)
Brewed filter coffee, 8 ozAbout 95 mg
Matcha, one servingAbout 60–70 mg

Figures are typical averages. Real caffeine varies with the bean, roast, grind, dose and brew time, so treat every number here as an estimate.

The chart

Caffeine in every drink on our menu.

Here is every drink on the MRJADE hot coffee menu and its typical caffeine. Where we know how many shots we use, we say so. For anything else, ask the barista how many shots go in, then use the rule above.

Typical caffeine by drink
DrinkWhat’s in itTypical caffeine
Espresso (single)One shot~63 mg
Espresso (double)Two shots~125 mg
AmericanoTwo shots plus hot water (at MRJADE)~125 mg
Flat WhiteDouble espresso, silky milk, 8 oz (at MRJADE)~125 mg
MacchiatoEspresso with a little frothy milk~63–125 mg
LatteEspresso and steamed milk~63–125 mg
CappuccinoEspresso, steamed milk, generous foam~63–125 mg
Spanish LatteEspresso and sweetened condensed milk~63–125 mg
Dark MochaEspresso, chocolate, steamed milk~65–135 mg (cocoa adds a little)
V60 FilterHand-brewed filter coffee~80–140 mg per cup
Turkish CoffeeFinely ground, slow-prepared, 4 oz~50–65 mg
Matcha LatteOrganic Japanese matcha from Kyoto and milk~60–70 mg

Ranges reflect single vs double shots. A range like ~63–125 mg means “one or two shots”.

The key idea

Count the shots, not the size.

Almost all the caffeine in an espresso drink comes from the espresso. Milk, foam, water, ice and condensed milk only change the volume and taste. That is why a big milky latte can be gentler than a small, punchy flat white.

Milk dilutes taste, not caffeine

A latte tastes milder than a flat white because there is more milk, but with the same shots the caffeine is the same.

Water does the same

An Americano is espresso stretched with hot water. Longer cup, same caffeine as the shots inside. See americano vs espresso.

Strong taste ≠ strong caffeine

Dark, bitter or intense flavour comes from roast and extraction, not caffeine. A dark roast is not more caffeinated.

Ask for a shot change

Want more or less? Ask for an extra shot, or a single instead of a double. It is the simplest way to control caffeine.

Concentration vs cup

Is espresso stronger than filter coffee?

Per sip, yes. Per cup, not always. Espresso is far more concentrated, packing about 63 mg into a tiny 1 oz shot. A full cup of filter coffee like our V60 is much weaker per sip but much bigger, so one cup can match or beat a single shot. Cold brew works the same way: long steeping can make it very strong, which is why it often surprises people. Compare in cold brew vs iced coffee.

Espresso

Most caffeine per ml. Quick, intense, done in a few sips.

V60 filter

Less per sip, but a full cup adds up. Clean and slow to drink.

Cold brew

Often the strongest per cup, depending on the recipe and how much it is diluted.

Turkish coffee

Rich and thick, but served in a small 4 oz cup, so total caffeine stays moderate.

Different kind of lift

Coffee vs matcha caffeine.

A matcha drink usually has a little less caffeine than a double-shot coffee, but the bigger difference is how it feels. Matcha contains L-theanine, an amino acid linked with calm focus, so many people describe its energy as steadier and smoother. Read more in does matcha have caffeine? and matcha vs coffee.

Why numbers vary

Five things that change caffeine.

Two cups of the “same” coffee can differ a lot. These are the main reasons any caffeine chart, including ours, gives estimates rather than exact figures.

1. The bean

Robusta beans contain roughly twice the caffeine of Arabica. Most specialty coffee is Arabica.

2. The dose

More ground coffee in the basket means more caffeine in the shot.

3. Brew time

Longer contact between water and coffee extracts more caffeine, which is why cold brew can be so strong.

4. The roast

Roast level changes flavour far more than caffeine. Light and dark roasts are close by weight.

5. The number of shots

By far the biggest factor in any espresso drink. One shot or two changes caffeine by half.

Plus: decaf

Decaf is not zero. A decaf espresso still usually has a few milligrams of caffeine.

Over ice

Does iced coffee have less caffeine?

No. An iced latte or iced Americano is made with the same espresso shots as the hot version, so caffeine is the same. Ice only dilutes the taste as it melts, which can make it feel weaker. The exception is cold brew, which is brewed differently and is often stronger per cup. Browse our iced coffee menu or read iced coffee in Downtown Dubai.

Iced espresso drinks

Same shots, same caffeine as hot. Taste softens as ice melts.

Cold brew

Steeped for hours, so it is often the strongest iced option per cup.

Daily guide

How much caffeine is too much?

The US FDA says up to 400 mg a day is generally not associated with negative effects for healthy adults. That is roughly three double-shot drinks. Sensitivity varies a lot from person to person, and people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, on medication or sensitive to caffeine are usually advised to have less. If in doubt, check with your doctor.

What 400 mg looks like (approximate)
Double-shot drinks (flat white, americano)About 3
Single-shot lattes or cappuccinosAbout 6
Cups of filter coffee, 8 ozAbout 4

  • At MRJADE, the Flat White and Americano are both made with two shots.
  • Matcha has roughly 60–70 mg per serving, with L-theanine for steadier energy.
  • The FDA suggests up to 400 mg a day for most healthy adults.
Quick answers

Coffee caffeine: your questions

Short answers before you order.

How much caffeine is in a shot of espresso?

About 63 mg in a single shot and about 125 mg in a double, though it varies with the bean and dose.

How much caffeine is in a latte?

The same as the espresso inside it: about 63 mg with one shot or about 125 mg with two. The milk adds no caffeine.

Does a flat white have more caffeine than a latte?

Often, yes. At MRJADE the flat white is made with a double shot in a smaller 8 oz cup, so it usually has as much or more caffeine than a latte, and tastes stronger.

Does an Americano have more caffeine than an espresso?

Only if it has more shots. An Americano is espresso plus hot water. MRJADE’s Americano uses two shots, so it matches a double espresso.

Which coffee has the most caffeine?

Per cup, drinks with the most espresso shots or a large cold brew usually top the list. Per sip, espresso is the most concentrated.

Does dark roast have more caffeine?

No. Roast level changes flavour much more than caffeine. Dark and light roasts are very close by weight.

Does matcha have more caffeine than coffee?

Usually less. One serving of matcha has about 60–70 mg, versus about 125 mg in a double-shot coffee, and its L-theanine gives a smoother feel.

How much caffeine is safe per day?

The US FDA says up to 400 mg a day is generally fine for healthy adults. Some people, including those who are pregnant, are advised to have less.
