Mocha vs Latte: what’s the difference?
A latte is espresso with steamed milk. A mocha is a latte with chocolate. That one ingredient changes the sweetness, the body and who each drink is for. Here is how they compare, and how to choose at MRJADE on Emaar Boulevard.

What is the difference between a mocha and a latte?
A latte is espresso with steamed milk and a thin layer of foam. A mocha is the same base with chocolate added. That makes a mocha sweeter, richer and more dessert-like, while a latte is milder and lets the coffee lead. Caffeine is about the same when both use the same number of espresso shots.
Think of a mocha as a latte that meets hot chocolate. If you want coffee first, order the latte. If you want comfort and sweetness, order the mocha.
| Mocha | Latte | |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Espresso, chocolate, steamed milk | Espresso, steamed milk |
| Flavour | Rich, chocolatey, rounded | Creamy, mellow, coffee-forward |
| Sweetness | Sweet from the chocolate | Not sweet unless you add syrup or sugar |
| Body | Fuller and thicker | Smooth and lighter |
| Caffeine | Espresso shots, plus a little from cocoa | Espresso shots only |
| Calories | Higher (chocolate adds sugar and fat) | Lower |
| Best for | An afternoon treat, sweet tooth, cooler evenings | Everyday coffee, mornings, tasting the espresso |
These are typical café differences. Recipes vary by shop, especially the type and amount of chocolate.
Same family, one key difference.
Both drinks belong to the espresso-and-milk family, alongside the flat white and cappuccino. They start the same way: a shot of espresso, then steamed milk. Everything that sets them apart comes from the chocolate.
The espresso
The base of both drinks. It brings the coffee flavour, the caffeine and the crema. New to espresso? See americano vs espresso.
The milk
Steamed until silky, with a thin layer of microfoam on top. It softens the espresso and gives both drinks their creamy texture.
The chocolate
Only in the mocha. Usually a chocolate sauce or cocoa mixed with the espresso before the milk goes in, so it blends through every sip.
The finish
A latte finishes clean and milky. A mocha finishes long and chocolatey, closer to a dessert.
Coffee-first vs chocolate-first.
The simplest way to choose is to ask what you want to taste most. In a latte, milk rounds off the espresso but the coffee is still the star. In a mocha, chocolate and coffee share the stage, and the chocolate often wins.
| If you like… | Order | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tasting the coffee itself | Latte | Nothing competes with the espresso except gentle milk |
| Something sweet without adding syrup | Mocha | The chocolate brings natural sweetness |
| Hot chocolate, but with a lift | Mocha | It is essentially a hot chocolate with espresso |
| A lighter, everyday drink | Latte | Fewer calories and a cleaner finish |
| Something sweet but not chocolate | Spanish Latte | Condensed milk gives a caramel-like sweetness instead |
| Less milk, more coffee | Flat White | A double shot in a smaller 8 oz cup |
Does a mocha have more caffeine than a latte?
Only slightly, if at all. Caffeine comes almost entirely from the espresso, so a mocha and a latte made with the same number of shots are very close. Chocolate contains a small amount of caffeine and theobromine, so a mocha can edge ahead by a few milligrams, but not enough to notice. The number of shots matters far more than the drink’s name.
Same shots, same buzz
Two espresso shots in either drink means roughly the same caffeine.
Cocoa adds a little
Chocolate brings a small extra amount, plus theobromine, a milder stimulant.
Want less?
Ask for a single shot, or try matcha instead. See matcha vs coffee.
Want more?
Go short and strong with an espresso or macchiato.
How a barista makes each one.
The steps are almost identical. The mocha simply adds one at the start, which is why the two drinks are so often confused. The name “mocha” comes from the port of Mocha in Yemen, once famous for coffee with natural chocolatey notes; today it simply means coffee with chocolate. “Latte” is short for the Italian caffè latte, or milk coffee.
| Step | Latte | Mocha |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Chocolate | Skipped | Chocolate sauce or cocoa goes into the cup first |
| 2. Espresso | Pulled straight into the cup | Pulled onto the chocolate and stirred until smooth |
| 3. Milk | Steamed to a silky texture with fine microfoam | Same silky steamed milk |
| 4. Pour | Poured to form a thin foam top, often with latte art | Poured the same way; the darker colour shows through |
| 5. Finish | Served as is | Sometimes finished with a dusting of cocoa |
Why order matters
Mixing espresso into the chocolate before the milk melts it evenly. Add chocolate last and it sinks to the bottom in a sweet layer.
Why milk texture matters
Over-foamed milk turns a latte into a cappuccino and makes a mocha taste thin. Silky microfoam keeps both smooth and rich.
The Dark Mocha and the Comfort Latte.
Both are on the MRJADE hot coffee menu, alongside nine other espresso and brewed drinks. Here is how they sit next to their closest relatives.
| Drink | What’s in it | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Dark Mocha | Espresso, rich chocolate, steamed milk | Deep, chocolatey, indulgent |
| Latte | Espresso, steamed milk | Creamy, mellow, easy-drinking |
| Spanish Latte | Espresso, sweetened condensed milk | Rich and sweet; our bestseller |
| Cappuccino | Espresso, steamed milk, generous foam | Lighter and airier |
| Flat White | Double espresso, silky milk, less foam (8 oz) | Stronger, smoother coffee hit |
Iced mocha vs iced latte.
The difference holds over ice. An iced latte is espresso and cold milk, light and refreshing. An iced mocha adds chocolate and drinks more like a chocolate milkshake with a coffee kick. Both are on our iced coffee menu; for slower, smoother options read cold brew vs iced coffee or browse iced coffee in Downtown Dubai.
Iced Latte
Clean and refreshing. The best pick on a hot afternoon when you still want to taste the coffee.
Iced Mocha
Sweet and indulgent. Chocolate stays rich even as the ice melts, so it holds its flavour well.
Five tips before you order.
Small tweaks make a big difference to both drinks. Ask the barista; most of these take seconds.
Too sweet?
Ask for less chocolate in your mocha. You keep the flavour and cut the sugar.
Too milky?
Switch from a latte to a flat white for a stronger coffee-to-milk ratio.
Want it richer?
A mocha already has more body; a Spanish Latte adds richness without chocolate.
Late in the day?
Ask for a single shot. We are open until 11 PM, and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
Pairing with dessert?
A latte balances our San Sebastián cheesecake better than a sweet mocha.
Not a coffee day?
Try a matcha latte for creamy, steadier energy.

Mocha vs latte: your questions
Short answers before you order.
What is the difference between a mocha and a latte?
Both are espresso with steamed milk, but a mocha adds chocolate. That makes it sweeter and richer, while a latte is milder and lets the coffee lead.
Is a mocha stronger than a latte?
Not in caffeine. Strength comes from the number of espresso shots. A mocha can taste stronger because chocolate adds body and richness.
Does a mocha have more caffeine than a latte?
Only slightly. Chocolate adds a small amount of caffeine, but with the same number of shots the difference is minor.
Is a mocha sweeter than a latte?
Yes. The chocolate makes a mocha sweet on its own, while a plain latte has no added sweetness.
Which has more calories, a mocha or a latte?
A mocha, because chocolate adds sugar and fat. A latte is the lighter choice.
Is a mocha just hot chocolate with coffee?
Very close. A mocha is espresso, chocolate and steamed milk, so it tastes like a hot chocolate with an espresso kick.
What is the difference between a mocha and a Spanish latte?
Both are sweet lattes. A mocha is sweetened with chocolate; a Spanish latte uses sweetened condensed milk for a creamier, caramel-like taste.
